There are two types of people in this world.
People who don't like mornings, and people that are lying to themselves.
Okay, so that might be a little harsh. It's not that I'm noooot a morning person, I totally can get behind the logic of wanting to have more hours in the day. It's really just the getting up and going part I have trouble with. Getting up, going, having my shit together and being out the door on time. Thaaaaaat's the tricky part. Luckily, these are some ways I've been able to figure out and follow 99% of the time to ensure a easier morning.
1. Get Up When You Know You Should
This is a hard one, I'll admit. Especially for us chronic snooze button hitters. The second you hear your alarm, open your eyes as wide as you can and throw the covers off yourself. Maybe even sit up. This will help to wake you up at least a little. If you can wake your brain up just enough to think about how late and miserable you know you'll be if you don't get up, that should help.
2. Give Yourself Time to F**k Around
On that same note, if you're a person who checks social media in the morning like it's the paper (🙋🏻) give yourself the time to do that. Instead of saying "ugh, that's a waste of time I just won't check Twitter," acknowledge that you probably will, which is fine, and allow a little extra time to lay in bed and do that.
3. Pack Lunch the Night Before
Now if you're a meal prep queen, then first of all, congrat-u-fricking-lations for having your life together like that. You are all I aspire to be. But, this step may be second nature to you. For the rest of us, maybe less so. Packing your lunch the night before is annoying as hell and does not seem appealing when it's 9 pm and you're 6 episodes deep into Stranger Things. But it will absolutely help make your morning seamless. I think the key to this one is making extra when you're preparing dinner, and packing it up before you even sit down to eat. You'll be amazed at how put together you'll feel if you try this.
4. Pick an Outfit You Feel Good In
Whether that's sweatpants or heels, wear something that's gonna make you feel good throughout the day. It sounds stupid and trivial but I genuinely feel better about my life when I'm wearing something I feel cute in.
5. Make Ya'self Some B-Fast
Now yeah, I know, everyone's tired of hearing the old "eat a balanced breakfast" line, but seriously. It gets your body going and in the case of my my favorite go-to breakfast, it's an excuse to eat chocolate before noon. Like, who's not down with that? Rice cake. TJ's PB. Chocolate chips. Simple, delicious, and people in my UberPools always say "wow, that looks amazing!" (although I'm totally nervous for the day I get in a car with someone that's allergic 😬) If you're not down with rice cakes, smother it in the nut butter of your choice and you won't even be able to tell, or just try some sprouted bread as a base with a little kick of extra protein.
6. Listen to Jams That Get You Goin'
Whatever that means to you! Lately for me, anything featuring Chance the Rapper is my number one morning jam. If that's you, too, check out this kickass Chance guest list playlist my boyfriend Taylor (www.whiskeyandspin.com) whipped up. If you're looking for something with a little more girl power, check out the artist LOLO.
7. #Check Yourself Before You #Wreck Yourself
Last but probably among the most important, check in with yourself before you even open that door. Keys? Yes. Wallet? Yes. Bus pass, lunch, extra tampons? Yes yes and yes. Check yourself before you wreck yourself is a real thing to consider, y'all. Better to remember what you forgot before you step foot into the world.
*BONUS: Work Out
Now bear with me here, I know this sounds CRAZY to anyone that is not a natural morning person. BUT, let me tell you - forcing myself to get up and take a spin class before I do anything else totally puts me in an I'm-such-a-badass-because-I-worked-out-before-the-sunrise kind of mood, and totally sets a tone for the whole day. I know when I tell most people this, they write it off as crazy talk and never consider themselves someone that could work out that early. I get it, it's not for everyone. BUT. Try it sometime, you might surprise yourself.
