I've talked shit about Florida my entire life. Let's be honest, it's an easy target.
It's America's Armpit, it's Heaven's Waiting Room, it's covered in geckos. What's not to mock?
But to be fair, before this summer I had only ever visited Tampa and Orlando. I didn't know until visiting Miramar Beach that there were such beautiful white sandy beaches with crystal clear water. I judged too quickly and too harshly.
So yes, it may be sweaty, it may be touristy and it may be the retirement community capital, but Florida is better than the rep we've given it.
I don't, however, have any way to justify all the weird headlines that come out of there. ("Florida Man Has Sex With Dolphin, Says It Seduced Him" or "Flaming Lingerie Prompts K-Mart Evacuation" - real headlines, Google 'em)
But truly, if you've ever thought about taking a road trip with your best friends...stop thinking and do it. (Especially if you're really lucky and one of your best friend's family owns a condo on a beach somewhere.) Miramar was a great time with three of my closest friends and not a weekend I will soon forget. 😚
